My problem is with getting expression into what I play. Everything I'm doing seems really lifeless. I realize that technique plays a role. And, I've been working on that. But, my biggest problem is putting all the techniques to use in melodic ways. Are there some rules to melody creation that can tie into the physical and technical side of playing melody? Hope you can help.Sam - Hagerstown, MD. USAA: Developing our physical and our technical approach for melodic playing comes from having an awareness for several concepts. There's the idea of planning your parts, (so that each new melody compliments your previously performed phrase). There's expression which is developed from learning to compliment melodic ideas through your technical devices, (like; bending, legato, and slides). Plus, there is chord tone targeting and rhythmic contour (how we use both speed and slow playing to capture our listeners attention in different ways).
