But, I'm unsure of myself as to if I have the chops to play in a band like this. I think I might just go and audition anyway, (for the experience), but I'd like to know your opinion. What are the lead and rhythm guitar abilities and kinds of techniques generally needed to play professionally? John - New York, NY. USAA: There are a number of important skills that should generally be there when playing professionally. First and foremost, a guitarist needs to have a great feel for rhythm and also excellent chord knowledge. There's also picking skills, so when you need to arpeggiate a chord, or target specific string sets, (as when playing double-stop lines), you can do that. Theory-wise, you should know how to take any riff idea and comprehend the chords to go with it, and you should also know how to do the same with a melody as well. Last but not least, you should be able to quickly create melodies and play a decent solo. In the video I run through the 15 Skills of Professional Guitarists.
