There are a few levels of learning involved in doing it correctly. The first level is of course creating a daily study plan focused upon memorizing each complete 2-octave scale pattern, (in all of their positions along the entire guitar neck). The second level - I would suggest, is that of learning to play composed melodic phrases using small portions of only a few scale patterns. Then, constantly relate the notes that you're using back to one of the complete 2-octave scale patterns that you've studied. In the video lesson, to help viewers have a better understanding of this workout, I look at an 8-bar melody and study how each measure relates to a small isolated pattern of the specific notes of the melody. Then follow-up with an association to the complete 2-octave in-position scale pattern.
