So far, I've learned the open chords and I know a few smaller chords. One of my favorite songs is Van Halen's, "Runnin' with the Devil." It has chords being played on the 4th to 2nd strings. It sounds great. How do I think of playing like this? Is there a system to playing these, "Chord Based Riffs," (for beginners). Thanks!Kenzo - JAPAN A: Using a collection of triads to create "chord based riffs" is a very cool sound that can offer us rhythm ideas for many different styles of music. We find sounds like this in; rock, jazz, funk, soul or pop music. These chord riffs tend to be versatile enough that we can have them function well either "with", or "without" distortion. When we organize triads and work at creating a "system" for using them during our composing of music, we need to learn a few ideas about chord harmony and key signatures. To help get started with using these chords, I'm going to set up a couple of chord harmonies in both major and minor keys and once they're established, we'll experiment with creating chord riff's out of those harmonies to put this information to use.
