Merry Axemas

参与专辑的名吉他手包括「史密斯飞船(Aerosmith)」吉他手Joe Perry所演奏的猫王名曲「Blue Christmas」;「邦乔飞合唱团(Bon Jovi)」吉他手Richie Sambora 来诠释「Cantique De Noel (O' Holy Night)」,并且搭配Annie Belanger 的歌声;「深紫色合唱团(Deep Purple)」吉他手Steve Morse弹奏「Joy To The World 」;「匆促合唱团(Rush)」Alex Lifeson表现出「The Little Drummer Boy 」的另一风味,同时他还担任其他各种乐器的演奏;日本名吉他手布袋寅泰(Hotei)演奏约翰蓝侬(John Lennon)与小野洋子(Yoko Ono)之赞美诗「Happy Xmas (War Is Over)」,另外,还有葛莱美奖得主Eric Johnson、吉他前辈Jeff Beck,以及Steve Vai本人和其吉他老师Joe Satriani…。这张相当难得的耶诞专辑将带领乐迷们度过一个非常难忘的耶诞节。

Japanese edition featuring 'Mount Fuji Christmas' by Mr.Big's Paul Gilbert added as a bonus track & a seven second long hidden bonus track by Steve Vai 'wishing you a Merry Axemas and a Happy New Year'. 13 tracks total. A collection of covers of Christmas Carols by guitar wizards, it also features Vai, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Steve Morse, Joe Satriani, Rush's Alex Lifeson, Richie Sambora, Jeff Beck and Hotei. 1997 Sony release. The full title is 'Merry Axemas: A Guitar Christmas'.

The variety of holiday music has improved dramatically over the years and every "type" of music seems to have jumped on the bandwagon. Not only are there holiday rock recordings, but now there are holiday rock guitar recordings. While the music here is a mixed bag, it turns out to be a refreshing change from the contrived offerings that other rock artists have produced. Kenny Wayne Shepherd kicks things off with a rousing version of "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer," while Eric Johnson proves to be the most technically proficient of the players assembled here. There are other strong offerings from Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Brian Setzer. However, the performances turned in by Joe Perry, Richie Sambora and Hotei do not measure up. Despite the uneven moments, this is worth picking for anyone who truly needs to rock around the Christmas tree.
