Switchfoot will release their highly anticipated new album and film under the title, Fading West, this Fall. In addition, on June 24, they released the official full-length trailer for their upcoming movie.
"The concept of the movie is basically what we live. We are always writing, always touring, and always surfing, so we will just be diving into the journey as it unfolds. Our goal was always to be professional surfers- and I am only partially kidding about that and if nobody is going to make a movie about us. Lets do it ourselves,"Jon Foreman said, according to Breathecast.
The film will connect surfing, performing and the struggles of life into a unique package. "From the shore of the ocean is forever, its a beautiful dangerous place, music is tied to the sea, born from the struggle, looking for hope, because hope belongs in the dark places," the trailer begins.
"As a band, weve come further than I ever thought we would, eight albums, its unbelievable what weve been through together, but you cant just sing the same song, so we set out on a new kind of journey," it continues.
The film will document the bands journey as they intentionally take on uncomfortable shows, weather the storms of life as brothers and return home to ocean where their connection began. "Music and surfing, I think theres the ultimate form of freedom," says Pro Surfer, Rob Machado, during the trailer.
The band has been working on the movie for over a year now. "Its a project that that weve been dreaming about for a long time - a documentary on Switchfoot: music, surfing, and the journey of the past eight records together," they wrote on their website. The movie follows them on the road, surfing and performing.
A sneak peek into the upcoming film will be available at the ninth annual Switchfoot Bro-Am, a benefit concert and surf contest taking place from July 12- 13 in SanDiego California. Proceeds from the concert and contest will go towards helping homeless children. The film preview will take place the evening of July 12. Other draw-ins to the event are auctions, prizes, food tastings, a live Switchfoot performance, a surf contest, beach vendors and more.
Fading West will also by the title of Switchfoots ninth studio album that is scheduled to be released in October, 2013 through Atlantic records. The songs on the new album will consist almost entirely of new music that was written while the band was on tour this past year. The new album is expected to feature longer, more cinematic songs due to the albums connection with the film. "I want our songs to be the songs that open the doors of the soul, to look at a story bigger than ourselves," the trailer states in closing.
