RkBt.hmn - How To Use Polyrhythms For Drums and Melodic Instruments In this episode I discuss the concepts of Polyrhythms and how they are used in drum set verses a melodic instrument. The types of polyrhythms covered in this episode are 3:2, 4:3 and 5:4. These concepts must internalized before more moving on to more advanced concepts like metric modulation (think Vinnie Colaiuta) or more complex linear patterns. In future videos I will show you how to use these concepts in orchestral writing.

Demi Lovato Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Lyndsey McKenna | April 14, 2021 A few years ago, some of us on the NPR Music team stumbled upon a copy of Demi Lovato's 2013 book, Staying Strong: 365 Days A Year. Reading Lovato's heartfelt daily reflections became a workday habit; her transparency and vulnerability made us ardent admirers who wanted nothing but the very best for Demi. We made it our mission to get Demi to the Tiny Desk, and though the pandemic had other plans, Lovato's Tiny Desk (home) concert was worth the wait. Recorded on a sunny spring day in her Los Angeles backyard, Lovato begins with a moving rendition of "Tell Me You Love Me" from her 2017 record of the same name, accompanied by subtle, sparse keys. She continues her set with the title tracks from her recently-released studio album, Dancing With The Devil...The Art Of Starting Over. On both tracks, Lovato's voice feels stabilizing and grounding; there's a sense of clarity and purpose in its power. When interviewed by NPR's Ailsa Chang back in 2017, Demi Lovato said, "I think I've lived a lot of life." Through both her struggles and successes, Lovato's shown all sides of herself – the confident and unapologetic star, but also the complexities of recovery – inviting us on her journey in a deeply personal way. Synth Workshop / Roland History - Studio Time: S2E4 Have some good speakers or headphones for this one! In this episode, I explore the use-cases and features of various unique synthesizers around my studio and walk down the timeline of Roland synths. A question and comment that I get asked a lot is; These synths are worth a fortune; Yes, now they are! 1 The trick is to buy this stuff when its dirt cheap and easy available. I bought most of mine in the 80's early nineties. No one had an idea that these would come back into fashion and people sold synths for nothing. I mean really for nothing. A ps3300 Korg would sell for 300$. Now I saw recently one on eBay for 30.000 Pounds ( 40.000$). Nobody wants to pay that money for something like that! That is exactly the reason why I do not own certain synths. I would like to have them but I am not willing to pay that insane money. E.g. I do not own a roland 303. I would love to have one but I will not pay $4.000 for a synth that should cost $100. Arp 2500; $250.000, Really? That is a house! Now I am buying gear that was released in the 90's and 2000's. Dirt cheap; easy to get.... Who knows in 40 years what they are worth. $50-$250 will buy you heaven. But Value is not the point here. I use them, I love them, I cherish them. ting: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Abby O’Neill | March 22, 2021 Music icon Sting returns to Tiny Desk with a new collaborator in tow, and the story is heartwarming. During the pandemic, Beninese pop star Shirazee adapted his own rendition of Sting's classic "Englishman in New York" into "African in New York." His version made its way to Sting, who loved it so much that he asked Shirazee to lend his voice to his Tiny Desk (home) concert and record for his new Duets album. Their chemistry feels natural and just as comforting as this long overdue sunshine after a grueling winter. Shot in a lounge in NYC where Sting's presently recording another album, these two gentlemen share a touching moment between songs, expressing their mutual admiration and discussing the sheer joy about a simple concept – performing in a room together after 12 long months of isolation and virtual collaborations. As a follow up, Sting jumps into a stunning acoustic performance of "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You," another one of his many classics. The timbre of his voice conjures a sense of carefree familiarity, reminiscent of times with more levity and peace. His finale, "Sister Moon," is a gem from his 1987 solo album, Nothing Like the Sun, that rarely gets performed live. Pinocchio - Ron Carter Bass Transcription Ron Carter's walking bass line on "Pinocchio" - the great Wayne Shorter composition from the Miles Davis album "Nefertiti" I did not include chord symbols on this transcription. There are some definite changes being consistently outlined, but there is a lot of substitution happening as well as a number of moments where the form shifts from the structure of the tune. Very quick ears from the rhythm section on this! It is a pretty fun and interesting exercise to break down what is happening. Ron is clearly marking the form at many places harmonically, especially the B minor/Maj7 to G minor measure sections which have a strong sound and easier to identify. I'll break it down at some point as I am hearing it. In short for now, Herbie's solo is the only one that adheres to the form all the way through the way I follow it, although the horns do not enter at the top of the form :)
