As you're probably tired of reading if you've seen my other reviews of Göran Söllscher's albums, I find the combination of his playing and the 11-string Bolin guitar he uses for lute music to be absolute magic.
The majority of the music here falls into that category.
Somewhat surprisingly, however, since his versions of many other Bach works are my favourites, I find Mr Söllscher's Chaconne (in Segovia's transcription) a trifle unexciting, although perfectly musical. My first choice of the recordings I've heard would probably be Manuel Barrueco's, especially as he plays the entire Partita.
The Marlborough Variations are rather out-of-place, and since I'm not a particular Sor enthusiast anyway I would rather have had something more in keeping with its Renaissance and Baroque companions; but that's just a personal preference.
Despite these reservations about the final tracks, to me this album remains indispensable. Insane though it may seem, the three wonderful little pieces by Michelangelo Galilei, which I have never heard anyone else play, are alone worth the price although they total only 4'21".
