Brilliant song from the new album, and a not too
shabby tab, if i do say so myself (tabbed in gp4 but
as always, converted to gp3 for the benefit of those
without 4. Aren't I kind?) Nice and easy to play...
except, as always for that bloody solo.
*Warning* - I have used weird instruments for some of
the special effects, so they may not sound as intended
on some sound cards.
The intro is acheived by scraping your pick across the
E string. Think slow motion pick slide.
For those of us without whammy pedals (or even
whammy bars), I have done my best to approximate the
solo.
Much like the "Like A Stone" solo, I suspect Tom is
once again making good use of octave slides.
Naturally, this is mostly impossible without a whammy
pedal, so a good old fashioned slide-in or bend will
suffice in most cases.
The first part is a very cool scratchy thing, most likely
using the whammy pedal. I also supect the use of
the killswitch method.
(Killswitch Method) Turn one pickup volume to 0 and
the other on full, and flick the selector switch to
acheive perfect staccato effects. Hard to master.
The first part of the solo is played as an overdub - i've
transferred the main riff to bass for the benefit of the
lone guitarists. but make your own decsions as to what
to do here.
As for the rest of the solo - it think it's probably whammy,
but wah wah will also suffice. The bits that I have used
a muted trumpet instruent for should be bass position
and the guitar bits are treble position. I think. I'm not too
sure about the notes I've used in some cases either,
but it all basically sounds right. Basically...
I think there's either some Phase Shifting or Bass Wah
going on in the outro.
As always, if you don't have any effects pedals, or if
you only have one or two, you're going to be slightly
limited in playing this song. If you don't have anything
that I have listed, just do your best. If Tom Morello has
taught us anything, it would be to improvise, be unique,
and experiment!
