Clouds were an early psychedelic-cum-progressive rock trio that hailed from Edinburgh, consisting of Ian Ellis (vocals, guitar, bass), Billy Richie (keyboards, guitar, vocals), and Harry Hughes (drums). They started out in a psychedelic mode, in keeping with the times, and played clubs in London, where they caught the ears of Terry Ellis and Chris Wright — the future founders of Chrysalis Records — who signed them up. Their debut LP, Scrapbook, appeared on the Island label in 1968. Their subsequent two albums, Up Above Our Heads and Watercolour Days, were issued exclusively in the United States on the Deram label, in 1969 and 1971, respectively. The trio broke up soon after the release of the second Deram album.
