The Green Car Motel is the songwriting and performing partnership of Rick Garcia and René Reyes. They grew up in San Diego, a small town in south Texas located 80 miles east of the Mexican border. Now this particular San Diego is a whole other "Diego" of sorts. Here it's all about oil fields, cattle ranches, watermelon patches and cotton fields. It's a rugged way of life and not uncommon to find yourself working in such jobs to make ends meet.
Now the story of Garcia and Reyes goes something like this. While growing up in San Diego they became aware of their mutual love for music. They listened to Rock, Country, Blues, Folk, R&B and Tejano music. Reyes began playing the guitar at age twelve after finding his mother's old guitar in a closet. He taught himself by playing along with songs on the radio as well as playing to countless albums by his favorite artists. Meanwhile, Garcia was being heavily influenced by both parents. His mother was a well known vocalist who sang and performed with Latin orchestras while his father was a renowned western artist and writer. Garcia began writing poetry at an early age and wrote his first song at the age of nine.
As the years progressed they would both eventually relocate to Austin where they would further hone their craft by playing in a succession of bands. After a few years in Austin, Garcia headed West to Los Angeles to further continue the journey. Reyes would soon follow. They formed the band Act of Faith and went on to record three self-released CD's which were produced by John Avila of Oingo Boingo fame. The band garnered a sizeable fan base and were able to uniquely blend both English and Spanish to create a style all of their own. It was best described by Entertainment Today as "No Border Rock".
Garcia and Reyes went on to write numerous songs that would appear on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER as well as songs for such notable motion pictures such as PRICE OF GLORY (Jimmy Smits), SAVING SILVERMAN (Jack Black), and BLACK SCORPION. Individual writing and touring projects eventually came calling and they were forced to take a 2 year hiatus. In 2003 they came together to write and contribute songs to the films THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, THE JOB (Daryl Hanna/Brad Renfro) and BLIND HORIZON (Val Kilmer/Amy Smart) which is set for release sometime in 2004 or 2005.
As 2004 progressed Garcia and Reyes began to write a new chapter in the career. This would be the birth of the The Green Car Motel. The origin and concept of the name is perhaps a story for another page. However, stylistically this vehicle treads along theroad of their rich musical heritage. The music is both English and Spanish and draws heavily from a vast platform of subject matters. Most recently they have written and contributed songs to such major films as COLLATERAL (Tom Cruise/Jamie Foxx) which includes the end title theme song.
To sum it up, this music is coming to you straight out of the book of life. There are no smoke and mirrors around here. The musicians that will accompany them will ride along as "guests" or "residents" of THE GREEN CAR MOTEL which in turn makes for and intersting mix of musicians to say the least.
THE GREEN CAR MOTEL, a vehicle designed to ride and journey through this adventure we call life. Mystery certainly looms large, but then again mystery is a seven letter word that leads us to wonder.
