Milo Fine Drive features long-time collaborators Schlippenbach and Johansson exploring their kaputt-play roots (though there is a section of soft resolution during “Drive I”, and “Drive II” features a vocal-accordion interlude from Johansson – “Say It In A Little Mellow Tone” – the sort of conception that has of late, been a source of interest, for the duo.) The two non-stop pieces showcase the styles of the players well; Schlippenbach’s skittering two-fisted forays (touching every-so-often on fragments of past compositions) and Johansson’s plunging, proding polyrhythmics (to say nothing of his effectively awkward accordion technique and sweetly endearing vocal). Aber Drive hat ihre dichte Musik schon. Die auf dem Total Music Meeting 1979 aufgenommene Scheibe zeigt die Intensität der beiden Musiker deutlich auf, ob es sich nun um die freien Linien der Thelonious Monk’schen Kürzel handelt oder um verspielte Passagen, bei denen Johansson weder vor Gesang, noch vor dem Akkordeon zurückschreckt.
